SNAP and food help for older adults in Nevada

In short: If you are 60 or older in Nevada, SNAP lets you deduct medical bills you pay yourself, which can raise your benefit. You may also get a free monthly food box through Senior Nutrition and Wellness if your income is at or below 150% of the poverty level, and farmers' market coupons if your income is up to $29,526 a year. Apply for SNAP at accessnevada.nv.gov or a Division of Social Services (DSS) office.

SNAP for people 60 and over

SNAP gives you money each month on an EBT card to buy food. In Nevada it is run by the Division of Social Services (DSS).

Rules that help older adults

If you are 60 or older, or get certain disability payments:

  • Medical costs count. Medical bills that insurance or another program does not pay, if they are over $35 a month can be subtracted from your income. A lower countable income can mean more SNAP.
  • No cap on the housing deduction. Housing costs above half of your household income can be deducted. Other households have a dollar limit on this deduction, but it does not apply when someone is 60 or older or disabled.

Keep your receipts and bring them when you apply or renew.

How to apply for SNAP

  1. Online: accessnevada.nv.gov.
  2. On paper: print the Application for Assistance and mail, fax or drop it off at your local DSS office.
  3. If everyone in your home gets SSI, you can apply for SNAP at a Social Security office.
  4. If you have little or no money, tell DSS. You may get food help within 7 business days.

DSS phone: 775-684-7200 (Northern Nevada), 702-486-1646 (Southern Nevada) or 800-992-0900 toll-free. Check your EBT balance at 866-281-2443.

After you apply

  • Report changes as your approval notice tells you.
  • If you disagree with a decision, you can ask DSS for a fair hearing. Follow the deadline on your notice.

Things people miss

  • Not claiming medical costs. Many older adults do not list their medical bills on the SNAP application. If they are over $35 a month, they can raise your benefit.
  • Thinking you earn too much for a food box. The food box and farmers' market programs have their own income limits. Check them even if you do not get SNAP.
  • Waiting too long for farmers' market coupons. They run out.
