SNAP and food help for older adults in Kansas

In short: In Kansas, SNAP is called Food Assistance and is run by the Department for Children and Families (DCF). Homes with someone 60 or older get extra help, such as a higher savings limit and a deduction for medical costs. If you are 60 or older with income up to $2,461 a month, the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (KSFMNP) gives you a market card for fresh produce. Apply for Food Assistance at dcf.ks.gov or 1-888-369-4777.

Special rules if someone in your home is 60 or older

These rules apply if at least one person in your home is 60 or older, gets SSI or Social Security disability, or is a disabled veteran.

  • Higher savings limit: Your household can have up to $4,750 in countable assets. Most other homes can have $3,000. Your home does not count.
  • Medical costs: Medical bills you pay yourself that are over $35 a month can be taken off your income. Keep your receipts and bills.
  • Housing costs: You can take off all housing costs above half of your income after other deductions.
  • Interview at home or by phone: If it is hard for you to get to an office, ask DCF to set up a home visit or a phone interview.
  • Someone can help: You can name a person to apply for you, or to come with you.
  • SSI households: If everyone in your home gets or is applying for SSI, you can apply for Food Assistance at the Social Security office when you apply for SSI. Homes where everyone gets SSI may qualify more easily. Ask your DCF service center.

How to apply

  1. Apply online at dcf.ks.gov (choose "Apply for Services"), or call DCF at 1-888-369-4777 for help.
  2. Do the interview. Ask for a phone interview or home visit if you need one.
  3. Send proof of income, housing costs and medical costs.
  4. Get your EBT card if you are approved.

If you disagree with a decision, you can ask DCF for a fair hearing. The deadline is on your notice.
